About Us... Gold Ducat Boarding Kennels is owned and operated by Helen Dorrance, with help from Helen’s retired husband, Scott Bowman, and Kennel Assistant Extraordinaire, Layne Miller. Helen has been showing dogs in conformation for 31 years and has been a breeder for 26 years. She has owned and/or bred over 40 breed champions. Helen’s first breed is Golden Retrievers, but she also owns and has shown American Eskimos. She also owns two Italian Greyhounds (okay, they are actually Scott’s, but they share Helen and Scott’s home). Over the years, Helen has also owned a Papillon, Pomeranian, Labrador Retriever, English Cocker Spaniel, and a mixed breed. Helen and Scott have lived in Leander, Texas since 2002. They live on 8 totally-fenced acres that are devoted to their dogs, horses, sheep, goats, and chickens. She has been boarding dogs on her property for 5 years, and has recently added a second kennel building, bringing her total number of runs to 33. Now that the new building is up and running, the original building will be renovated during the next couple of months. Helen has been an AKC conformation judge for 6 years and is licensed to judge Golden Retrievers, English Cocker Spaniels, Labrador Retrievers, American Eskimos, and Junior Showmanship. She has competed in obedience since 1977 but once AKC endorsed agility trials, obedience trials went by the wayside. She has been an AKC agility judge for 3 years and has actively competed in agility for the last 12 years. She has run 11 different dogs in agility over those years. She has put 56 agility titles on various dogs, including 2 MACHS on an American Eskimo and is working on MACH 1 with the daughter. Helen is also extremely active in several breed and all-breed clubs:
Helen has served on the boards of all of of these clubs, and is currently the Western Director for the Golden Retriever Club of America (the National Breed Club) and is Vice President of the Lone Star American Eskimo Dog Club. Helen has chaired or been trial secretary for numerous conformation shows and obedience and agility trials. To say that Helen’s life revolves around dogs is an understatement. Dogs have been a major part of Helen’s life for decades, and she wouldn’t have it any other way.
